When Do You Legally Need a Roadworthy in Cairns?
In Queensland, a Safety Certificate (the official name for a Roadworthy) is required when:
- Selling a registered vehicle to a private buyer.

- Re-registering a vehicle that has been unregistered for more than 3 months.
Important Change: Since 2024, you no longer need to display a physical certificate on your car while it’s for sale, but you must have a valid one ready to give to the buyer at the time of transfer.
How Long Does a Roadworthy Last in 2026?
Don’t get caught out by the “Two-Two Rule.” For private sellers in QLD, your certificate is valid for:
- 2 Months OR
- 2,000 Kilometres (whichever comes first).
